Test Your Detectors

Start your fall maintenance checklist with an easy task—ensure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly and that they have fresh batteries.

Check for Leaks

Do a quick run-through of your home inside and out to check for leaks. This includes looking under your sinks, around the bathrooms, in your attic, and around the exterior of your home. It is important to catch leaks as soon as they start to avoid damage, especially when the temperatures drop.

HVAC Filter & Tune-Up

Make sure to change your HVAC filters for fall to keep the air in your home clean and your unit working effectively. It is also always a great idea to have your HVAC inspected in the fall to ensure your heat will be ready for winter.

Once the leaves are almost done falling, we recommend cleaning your gutters. If temperatures drop below freezing, the debris in your gutters can freeze and damage your gutters and make it hard for water to drain properly, leading to more damage.

Patio Furniture

Once the cooler temps set in and you’re not using your patio furniture, it is best to winterize them instead of letting them brave the cold. Cover or store patio tables, chairs, and grills to keep them lasting for years to come.

Driveway, Patio, & Walkways

Inspect your driveway, patio, and walkways for any cracks or uneven stones, bricks, or cement. With the coming cold, these cracks can grow, leading to more expensive repairs and unsafe walking conditions. If you find any cracks, make sure to seal them with the appropriate adhesive for that material.

Check Your Roof

It is also a good idea to inspect your roof, or have it inspected, to check for any damage that could cause issues over the winter. Any hail damage or missing shingles can cause leaks into your attic, which can damage your home and belongings.

Ensure Your Lawn is Ready for Winter

If you want to keep your lawn looking great, the best thing you can do is prepare it for winter. Winterizing your lawn can be done in 5 easy steps:

  • Mow
  • Aerate
  • Rake
  • Patch
  • Fertilize

Taking care of these lawn tasks in the fall will help your grass bounce back quicker in the spring.
