Holiday Decorating: Ways to Keep the Spirit Alive at Home This Year

The holidays are upon us—which means it’s time to make a trip to your attic for the holiday decorations! Although this year might bring a departure from tradition for many, decorating for the holidays is one ritual we can still enjoy to the fullest extent. Here are our top tips for decorating this year to keep the spirit alive at home, even if your extended family’s not there.

Enjoy the Ritual

Since large family gatherings aren’t recommended this year due to the pandemic, you might be feeling like decorating your home just for yourself and your immediate family isn’t worth the effort. But a little holiday cheer is just what we need right now, so we recommend that you deck the halls anyway! Make a night of it by turning on a cheesy holiday movie and cracking open a fresh carton of eggnog.

Choose a Theme That Brings Joy

If there was ever a year to treat yourself to new holiday decorations, it’s this one! Of course, classic holiday colors will never go out of style, but don’t be afraid to branch out and try a fresh holiday look. Warm, neutral colors with accents of gold and dark green can invite feelings of calmness and serenity into your living room. And pops of color (we like bright red and white, like a candy cane) can invigorate your space, adding to the buzz of the holiday season.

Spread the Love

Decorating doesn’t just have to refer to your home! Decorating cookies is a fun (and tasty) way to spend an evening. A perfect activity for kids and adults alike, baking is a great way to spend time indoors, something we’re all getting a little tired of doing lately! Get creative with different types of edible glitter and frosting, or go big and build a gingerbread house. And since the holidays are all about giving, package a few cookies into festive tins and ship them off to loved ones. Because who doesn’t love receiving baked goods in the mail around the holidays?

Don’t Forget the Outdoors

Even though the holidays might be a little less bustling outside the home this year, you can still light up your home’s exterior with festive string lights! Whether you love colored lights or all-white ones, your neighbors will sure appreciate the holiday cheer your home brings to the block.

Don’t forget your backyard, too. If you don’t already have one, buy a little fire pit to spend a few cozy nights outdoors this season roasting marshmallows and sipping mugfuls of hot cocoa. Adorn the space with a few throw blankets and some poinsettias, and voila! Your space will feel merry and bright in no time.
