How to Celebrate Long-Distance Holidays at Home
For many families, the holiday season means it’s time to start planning epic get-togethers. It sets the scene for traditions and brings the family together with lots of food and conversation. This year, however, how you celebrate your favorite holiday might be a little different. But this doesn’t mean that the traditions have to halt! There are many ways that you can still capture the holiday spirit and spend quality time with loved ones, friends, and family—together or apart.
Here are some creative ways that you can enjoy a memorable, long-distance holiday celebration:
If traveling or hosting a holiday celebration in person isn’t possible this year, gathering virtually might be the perfect solution. Plan ahead by sending out invitations with the virtual details and itinerary; keep an eye on those less tech-savvy friends or family members—they may need some extra guidance. Not sure how to host a virtual gathering? Here are some ideas:
- Play virtual games
- Have fun with a virtual holiday cookie party
- Sit down and share things your grateful for during a virtual meal
If you have family members who are unable to travel for health reasons or safety restrictions, make them care packages. This is a wonderful family activity that will keep the kids entertained for hours. These care packages don’t need to be extravagant! Some easy gifts could include:
- Non-perishable snacks (more points if they’re holiday-themed)
- DIY crafts, letters, drawings, etc.
- Entertainment of some kind (like a puzzle or a picture book)
Game & Movie Night
For a low-key holiday celebration with only your immediate family, consider gathering together with a themed, in-home “party.” Again, this doesn’t need to be an all-out party! Think more along the lines of a game and/or movie night with a holiday twist. What’s more, thanks to the latest streaming solutions that allow you to join and create watch parties with friends and family, this long-distance celebration can include everyone.
Create a New Tradition
Sadly, you may have to ditch some of your old holiday traditions if celebrating long distance. But on a more positive note, this provides the perfect opportunity to create a new tradition! Maybe this year, go all-out with holiday decorations around the house or have the kids each pick a new recipe to add to the traditional meal.
